In Search of Swing (2022)

In Search of Swing is a quartet for unpitched percussion, first performed by Sо̄ Percussion during a reading session on February 18th, 2022.

The music explores the dubiousness of swing and its notation. Over the course of the piece, unequal divisions of the beat are navigated in increasing complexity, from straight-ahead triplet swing, through quintuplet and even septuplet based swing beats. In the end, I hope you’d agree that no swing pattern is “more correct,” but that some pretty interesting things can happen when one explores different swing possibilities, or even combines them amongst each other.
